Brake Pads
The details are as follows :---
Removal & Installation
- Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
- If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
- Carefully pry the pad retainer spring out from the hub side and remove.
- Remove the plastic plugs from the caliper slide bolts and remove the bolts. Remove the caliper and the pads from the caliper.

Fig. Make sure the wrench is fully seated in the slide pin to prevent stripping internal hex
Fig. Inspect the slide pins for corrosion and pitting once removed
Fig. The inside pad will stay with the caliper and the outside pad will stay with the lower mount
Fig. The inside pad has a spring holding it in the piston bore
Fig. The upper pad is the outside pad and the lower pad with the spring is the inside pad
To install:
- Clean the brake caliper and all sliding surfaces. Press the caliper piston fully back into the caliper housing. Check for leaking fluid, damaged dust boots and frozen pistons.
- If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
- Install the brake pads in the caliper. Lower the caliper over the caliper mount.
- On E 30 models, install a new bolt and torque to 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Check that the pad springs are correctly seated.
- On E36 models,
- Lubricate the slider bolts with an approved brake grease.
- Install the slider bolts and torque to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm).
- Install the protective caps and the retainer spring.
- If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
- Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to 66-81 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm). .
CAUTION
Failure to properly torque the wheels to the correct torque using the proper sequence could cause a brake pulsation and rotor warpage.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
WheelsPlug for the brake pad wear indicatorCaliper guide bolts and the spring clamp - Turn up the caliper and remove the brake pads. The inner pad is located with a spring in the piston.
To install:
- Lubricate the mounting pads with suitable grease.
- Install or connect the following:
Brake pads onto the brake caliper, then swing the caliper down until the lower mounting bolt holes are alignedMounting bolts and spring clamp. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 42-48 ft. lbs. (56-66 Nm), and the guide bolts to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm).Wheels - Bleed the brake system if any of the brake system lines were disconnected.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Disconnect the plug for the brake pad wear indicator
- Remove the caliper guide bolts and the spring clamp.
- Turn up the caliper and remove the brake pads. The inner pad is located with a spring in the piston.
To install:
NOTE
The brake pads on both calipers on 1 axle should be replaced at the same time.
- Lubricate the mounting pads with a suitable grease.
- Install the brake pads onto the brake caliper, then swing the caliper down until the lower mounting bolt holes are aligned.
- Install the mounting bolts and spring clamp. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 42-48 ft. lbs. (56-66 Nm). Tighten the guide bolts to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm).
- Install the tire and wheel assemblies, then lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Bleed the brake system if any of the brake system lines were disconnected.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
