How to remove Oil Pan on 2005 BMW 325 ?

Oil Pan


Removal & Installation



E36 6-Cylinder Engines

NOTE
If an optional oil cooler has been added to the engine, the cooler may have to be removed from its mounts and supported.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the oil dipstick tube mounting fastener, if equipped, remove the vent hose from the lower portion of the dipstick tube, then lift the dipstick tube upward to remove. Cover the hole in the oil pan to avoid debris from entering and inspect the O-ring and replace as necessary.
  3. Unclip the power steering fluid lines from the front crossmember.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Attach a suitable engine lifting hoist to the lifting eye on the front of the engine and carefully lift the engine about 3 / 16 inches (5mm).
  6. If installed, remove the engine splash guard.
  7. Matchmark and disconnect the steering spindle from the steering gear.
  8. Remove the engine drive belts, then remove the power steering pump from the engine leaving the lines attached, place aside and secure.
  9. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir, and with the lines attached, place aside and secure.
  10. Loosen the top engine mount fasteners, and remove the lower fasteners.
  11. Disconnect both lower control arms from the crossmember.
  12. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container.
  13. Support the crossmember with a suitable jack, and remove the crossmember mounting fasteners, then carefully lower the crossmember.
  14. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the oil pipes from the oil pan.
  15. Remove the lower bell housing dust shield.
  16. Remove the oil pan mounting fasteners, then lower the oil pan and move forward to remove.

To install:

  1. Clean all mounting surfaces. Apply non-hardening sealant to the seams of the block, cover and pan joints. Install a new gasket and place the pan into position.
  2. Install the oil pan and torque the M8 bolts to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm) and M6 bolts to 80-97 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  3. The balance of assembly is in reverse order of removal noting the following.
  4. Top off the engine oil using the recommended engine oil.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6. Check and top off all fluid levels, check for normal operation and fluid leaks and repair as necessary.

M20 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle and support it. Drain the engine oil. On the 325iX remove the front subframe and differential.
  2. Remove the front lower splash guard, if necessary.
  3. Disconnect the electrical terminal from the oil sending unit.
  4. Remove the power steering gear from the front axle carrier.
  5. Remove the flywheel cover reinforcement.
  6. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan. Remove the oil pump bolts and take out the oil pump and oil pan.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan, paying attention to the following points:
    1. Clean the gasket surfaces and use a new gasket on the oil pan.
    2. Torque M8 bolts to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm) and M6 bolts to 80-97 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    3. Coat the joints on the ends of the front engine cover with a non-hardening sealing compound.
    4. Install the sending unit wire and the engine oil. If the power steering gear was removed, make sure to refill and bleed this system.


M42 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container. Disconnect the air cleaner and the heater hoses at the firewall. Remove the fan and fan cowl. Remove the dipstick tube and idle speed control.
  3. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold and at the transmission mount. Disconnect the engine mounts. Disconnect the power steering pump and the reservoir at the support arm.
  4. Carefully lift the engine to provide clearance for the pan removal. Remove the lower oil pan mounting bolts and take off the lower oil pan. Remove the upper section oil pan bolts and the oil pump intake. Remove the upper oil pan.
  5. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket. Fill the holes at the corners of the gasket where the covers, block and pan join with non-hardening sealant.

  1. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Install the upper pan, then the lower pan. Tighten both the upper and lower oil pan mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

M44 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container.
  3. Disconnect the exhaust pipe, if necessary.
  4. Remove the lower oil pan mounting bolts and take off the lower oil pan. Remove the upper section oil pan bolts and remove the upper oil pan.

To install:

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces and install new gaskets.
  2. Position the oil pan against the engine and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  3. Install the exhaust pipe, if removed.
  4. Install and tighten the oil pan drain plug, then fill the engine with the correct viscosity and amount of clean engine oil.
  5. Lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not extinguish within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engine OFF .
  7. Once started, check for any oil leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Engine oil
    Exhaust pipe, if necessary
    Lower oil pan mounting bolts and lower oil pan
    Upper section oil pan bolts and upper oil pan


To install:

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces and install new gaskets.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and mounting bolts. Bolts: 72 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    Exhaust pipe, if removed
    Oil pan drain plug, then fill engine with oil
    Negative battery cable

  3. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not extinguish within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engine OFF .

M50/M52/S50 Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the engine oil.
  2. Loosen the holding bolt for the oil dipstick guide pipe and remove the clamp. Pull the guide tube free of the pan.
  3. Remove all the oil pan bolts and remove the pan. Raise the engine slightly if needed for clearance.

To install:

  1. Apply sealer to the joint between the pan, front cover and block.
  2. Install new gaskets and install the pan. Torque mounting bolts to 6.5-8.0 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  3. Install the dipstick guide tube using a new base seal and tighten the holding bolt.

M52 2.5L, 2.8L, & S52 3.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Front lower splash guard, if necessary
    Oil
    Holding bolt for the oil dipstick guide pipe and remove the clamp. Pull the guide tube free of the pan.
    Electrical terminal from the oil level sending unit
    Power steering box, leaving the hoses attached from the front axle carrier

  3. Support the engine, then remove the engine mount fasteners.
  4. Support the crossmember and remove the fasteners securing the front cross member to the vehicle-s chassis. Carefully lower the jack.
  5. Lift the engine slightly.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Flywheel cover
    Oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan away from the engine and over the cross member


To install:

  1. Before installing the oil pan, clean the gasket surfaces and install a new gasket on the oil pan.
  2. Coat the joints on the ends of the front engine cover with a universal sealing compound.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and tighten the fasteners
    Flywheel cover

  4. Raise the crossmember into position and install the mounting bolts.
  5. Slowly lower then engine onto the engine mounts and install the engine mount fasteners.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering box
    Dipstick guide tube using a new base seal and tighten the holding bolt
    Electrical wiring harness to oil sending unit
    Front lower splash guard, if removed
    Oil pan drain plug, then fill the engine with oil
    Negative battery cable

  7. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not turn off within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engine OFF . Check for any oil leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Negative battery terminal
    Engine oil
    Holding bolt for the oil dipstick guide pipe and remove the clamp. Pull the guide tube free of the pan.
    All oil pan bolts and remove the pan. Raise the engine slightly if needed for clearance.


To install:

  1. Apply sealer to the joint between the pan, front cover and block.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan, with new gaskets. Mounting bolts: 78-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    Dipstick guide tube using a new base seal and tighten the holding bolt
    Engine oil
    All remaining fluids as necessary


M54 & S54 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Front lower splash guard, if necessary
    Oil
    Holding bolt for the oil dipstick guide pipe and remove the clamp. Pull the guide tube free of the pan.
    Electrical terminal from the oil level sending unit
    Power steering box, leaving the hoses attached from the front axle carrier

  3. Support the engine, then remove the engine mount fasteners.
  4. Support the crossmember and remove the fasteners securing the front cross member to the vehicle-s chassis. Carefully lower the jack.
  5. Lift the engine slightly.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Flywheel cover
    Oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan away from the engine and over the cross member


To install:

  1. Before installing the oil pan, clean the gasket surfaces and install a new gasket on the oil pan.
  2. Coat the joints on the ends of the front engine cover with a universal sealing compound.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and tighten the fasteners
    Flywheel cover

  4. Raise the crossmember into position and install the mounting bolts.
  5. Slowly lower then engine onto the engine mounts and install the engine mount fasteners.

    Power steering box
    Dipstick guide tube using a new base seal and tighten the holding bolt
    Electrical wiring harness to oil sending unit
    Front lower splash guard, if removed
    Oil pan drain plug, then fill the engine with oil
    Negative battery cable

  6. Start the engine and check that oil pressure is present; if the oil pressure lamp does not turn off within 5-7 seconds of starting the engine, turn the engine OFF . Check for any oil leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Negative battery terminal
    Engine oil
    Intake air filter assembly
    Automatic transmission lines
    Holding bolt for the oil dipstick guide pipe and remove the clamp. Pull the guide tube free of the pan.
    All oil pan bolts and remove the pan. Raise the engine slightly if needed for clearance.

To install:

  1. Apply sealer to the joint between the pan, front cover and block.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan, with new gaskets. Mounting bolts: 78-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    Dipstick guide tube using a new base seal and tighten the holding bolt
    Automatic transmission lines
    Intake air filter assembly
    Engine oil
    All remaining fluids as necessary


M60/M62 Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold cover. Remove the top clips on the radiator.
  3. Remove the cooling fan.
  4. Remove the guide tube for the oil dipstick.
  5. Remove the engine splash guards.
  6. Remove the cover for the oil filter so the oil will run back to the pan. Drain the engine oil. Disconnect the plug for the level switch.
  7. Remove the lower oil pan bolts and remove the lower oil pan. Remove the gasket and clean the mounting surfaces.
  8. Disconnect the left and right engine mounts at the bottom.
  9. Unbolt the power steering pump at the holder. On automatic transmissions, remove the oil pipes at the power steering pump.
  10. Remove the banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan.
  11. Remove the mounting bolt on the sprocket for the oil pump and remove the sprocket along with the chain.
  12. Remove the three oil pump mounting bolts and remove the oil pump. Remove the oil pipes out of the crankcase.
  13. Lift the engine by the front eye hook. Observe the distance between the engine and the firewall while lifting the engine.
  14. Unscrew the upper oil pan bolts and remove the upper oil pan.

To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket.
  2. Install the upper oil pan and torque the bolts to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  3. Lower the engine.
  4. Check the seals on the oil pipes and replace it if necessary. Lubricate the seals with oil and the oil pipes.
  5. Check the seal in the oil pump and replace it if necessary. Screw the hexagon adapter back into the oil pump until it stops.
  6. Position the oil pump and install the two right side oil pump mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 14-17 ft. lbs. (20-24 Nm). Position the chain on the pump and the sprocket and install the sprocket. Torque the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Verify that the chain is positioned correctly.
  7. Adjust the chain sag to 0.315-0.472 in. (8-12mm) by turning the hexagon adapter in the oil pump. Install the left side mounting bolt.
  8. Install the banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan.
  9. Install the power steering pump and connect the oil lines (if equipped).
  10. Making sure to connect the ground strap. Connect the left and right engine mounts at the bottom and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    NOTE
    If replacing the lower oil pan, remove the level switch from the old pan and install it in the new pan with a new O-ring.

  11. Position the lower oil pan with a new gasket. Install the bolts and torque to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm), beginning in the middle and working to the outside.
  12. Connect the plug for the level switch, making sure to replace the O-ring.
  13. Install the engine splash guards.
  14. Install the oil dipstick guide tube, making sure to replace the O-ring. Install the cooling fan.
  15. Install the intake manifold cover. Install the top clips on the radiator.
  16. Fill the engine oil. Connect negative battery cable.

M62 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Intake manifold cover. Remove the top clips on the radiator.
    Cooling fan
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick
    Engine splash guards
    Cover for the oil filter so the oil will run back to the pan
    Engine oil, then disconnect the plug for the level switch
    Lower oil pan. Remove the gasket and clean the mounting surfaces.
    Left and right engine mounts at the bottom
    Unbolt the power steering pump at the holder. On automatic transmissions, remove the oil pipes at the power steering pump.
    Banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan

  3. Attach a suitable engine hoist and lift the engine by the front eye hook. Observe the distance between the engine and the firewall while lifting the engine.
  4. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the oil pan.

To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket.
  2. Install upper oil pan. Bolts: 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm). Lower the engine.
  3. Check the seals on the oil pipes and replace it if necessary. Lubricate the seals with oil.
  4. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If replacing the lower oil pan, remove the level switch from the old pan and install it in the new pan with a new O-ring.



    Banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan
    Power steering pump and connect the oil lines, if equipped
    Ground strap, then connect the left and right engine mounts at the bottom and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).



    Lower oil pan with a new gasket. Bolts, beginning in the middle and working to the outside: 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    Plug for the level switch, making sure to replace the O-ring
    Engine splash guards
    Oil dipstick guide tube, making sure to replace the O-ring
    Cooling fan
    Intake manifold cover. Install the top clips on the radiator.
    Engine oil
    Negative battery cable


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Intake manifold cover
    Top clips on the radiator
    Cooling fan
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick
    Engine splash guards
    Cover for the oil filter so the oil will run back to the pan
    Engine oil, then disconnect the plug for the level switch
    Lower oil pan
    Gasket and clean the mounting surfaces
    Left and right engine mounts at the bottom
    Unbolt the power steering pump at the holder
    Oil pipes at the power steering pump, on automatic transmissions
    Banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan

  3. Attach a suitable engine hoist and lift the engine by the front eye hook. Observe the distance between the engine and the firewall while lifting the engine.
  4. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the oil pan.

To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket.
  2. Install upper oil pan. Bolts: 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm). Lower the engine.
  3. Check the seals on the oil pipes and replace it if necessary. Lubricate the seals with oil.
  4. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If replacing the lower oil pan, remove the level switch from the old pan and install it in the new pan with a new O-ring.



    Banjo bolt for the oil return pipe from the oil filter at the oil pan
    Power steering pump and connect the oil lines, if equipped
    Ground strap, then connect the left and right engine mounts at the bottom and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).



    Lower oil pan with a new gasket. Bolts, beginning in the middle and working to the outside: 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    Plug for the level switch, making sure to replace the O-ring
    Engine splash guards
    Oil dipstick guide tube, making sure to replace the O-ring
    Cooling fan
    Intake manifold cover
    Top clips on the radiator
    Engine oil
    Negative battery cable


M73 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Transmission and the oil pump assembly
    Windshield washer tank and the coolant expansion tank
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick
    Oil pipe on the tandem pump
    Mounting bracket
    Belt tensioner and the oil drain hose
    Flywheel
    Left and right engine mounts at the bottom
    Pipe adapter
    Oil pump consoles
    Oil pan bolts and remove the oil pan


To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces, and install a new gasket.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan. Mounting bolts: 84 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    Left and right engine mounts at the bottom, and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    Oil consoles and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    Flywheel. Bolts: 72 ft. lbs. (97 Nm).
    The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Transmission and the oil pump assembly
    Windshield washer tank and the coolant expansion tank
    Guide tube for the oil dipstick. Disconnect the oil pipe on the tandem pump. Remove the mounting bracket.
    Belt tensioner and the oil drain hose
    Flywheel
    Left and right engine mounts at the bottom. Remove the pipe adapter.
    Oil pump consoles. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the oil pan.


To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces, and install a new gasket.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan. Mounting bolts: 84 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    Left and right engine mounts at the bottom, and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    Oil consoles and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    Flywheel. Bolts: 72 ft. lbs. (97 Nm).
    The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure
    Engine oil


N52 Engines

CAUTION
Aluminum-magnesium material. No steel fasteners may be used due to the threat of electrochemical corrosion. A magnesium crankcase requires aluminum fasteners exclusively. Aluminum fasteners must be replaced each time they are removed. The end faces of aluminum fasteners are painted blue for purposes of identification. Torque specifications and torque angles must be observed for risk of damage.


NOTE
This removal and installation procedure is for AWD vehicles only.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Install engine support tool or equivalent.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, oil lines must be detached from the engine oil pan. If necessary, remove vane pump and set it aside.



    Negative battery cable
    Lower front axle
    Left drive shaft
    Right drive shaft
    Front axle differential
    Engine oil

  4. Remove oil pan bolts and remove the oil pan. If necessary, remove oil level sensor bolts and oil level sensor.

To install

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket and all seals. Replace all aluminum fasteners.
  2. Oil pan and mounting bolts. Torque following the tightening sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 70 inch lbs (8 Nm)
    2. Step 2: 90 degrees

  3. Reverse remaining removal procedure.

    Engine oil
    All remaining fluids as necessary


S14 Engine
  1. Remove the engine oil dipstick. Remove the splash guard from underneath the engine. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the drain plug and drain the oil. Unscrew all the bolts for the lower oil pan and remove it.
  3. Remove the oil pump.
  4. Remove the lower flywheel housing cover by removing the 3 bolts at the bottom of the flywheel housing and the 2 bolts in the cover just ahead of the flywheel housing.
  5. Disconnect the oil pressure sending unit plug. Unbolt the oil pan bracket. Disconnect the ground lead. Loosen its clamp and disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
  6. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the upper oil pan. Clean all sealing surfaces.

To install:

  1. Supply a new gasket and the coat the joints where the timing case cover and block meet with a brush-on sealant. Install the pan and torque the bolts evenly to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2. Reverse the remaining removal procedures to install, cleaning all sealing surfaces and using a new gasket on the lower pan, also. Torque the lower pan bolts, also, to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Install the oil pan drain plug, torquing to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm). Refill the oil pan with the required amount of approved oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.
