How to remove Oil Pump on 2005 BMW 325 ?

Oil Pump

Inspection

NOTE
The oil pump is responsible for providing constant lubrication to the whole engine and so it is recommended that a new oil pump be installed when rebuilding the engine.

Completely disassemble the oil pump and thoroughly clean all of the components. Inspect the oil pump gears and housing for wear and/or damage. Insure that the pressure relief valve operates properly and there is no binding or sticking due to varnish or debris. If all of the parts are in proper working condition, lubricate the gears and relief valve, and assemble the pump.

Inspection & Overhaul

Except M42 And M44 Engines

Check that the oil pump turns freely and without binding. Check that the oil pump pickup screen is not clogged. Check the condition of the drive sprocket on chain driven pumps.

While the pumps can be disassembled and checked for wear, it is more common to replace the oil pump if it has seen long service. If the pump is to be disassembled, be sure that new gaskets are available before disassembling the pump body.

If the drive sprocket is found to be worn as indicated by pointy teeth, replace the chain at the same time. The sprocket and the chain will wear at the same rate. In cases of severe wear, the crankshaft gear may need to be replaced also. This will require the crankshaft to be removed.

Depress the oil pressure relief valve washer and remove the snapring. Measure the free length of the spring and check that the piston can move freely. The valve is contained in the body of the oil pump.

Inspect the engine rod and main bearings. If either the crankshaft journals or the bearing journals show signs of excessive heat, grooving or excessive wear, replace the oil pump in addition to any other related worn components.

M42 And M44 Engines
  1. With the timing case removed, remove the cover from the pump rotors. Make note of the positioning of the rotors.
  2. Measure the play between the pump body and the outer rotor; outer rotor and inner rotor. The distance should be 0.005-0.008 inch (0.12-0.20mm).
  3. The marks on the rotors face up and the rotors should be placed in the original orientation as removed. Replace the cover assembly and tighten to 71-88.5 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
  4. Depress the oil pressure relief valve washer and remove the snapring. Measure the free length of the spring and check that the piston can move freely.

M73 5.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Oil pan
Bolts retaining the sprocket to the oil pump shaft and remove the sprocket
Oil pump retaining bolts and lower the oil pump from the engine block. There are 3 bolts at the front and 2 bolts attaching the rear of the oil pick-up to the lower end of a support bracket. It is necessary to remove all 5 bolts.

  3. Do not loosen the chain adjusting shims from the 2 mounting locations.

To install:

  1. Add or subtract shims between the oil pump body and the engine block to obtain a slight movement of the chain under light thumb pressure.
  2. Install oil pump in position.
    NOTE
When used, the 2 shim thicknesses must be the same. Tighten the pump holder at the pick-up end after shimming is completed to avoid stress on the pump.

  3. After the main pump mounting bolts are tightened, loosen the bolts at the bracket on the rear of the pick-up, allowing the pick-up to assume its most natural position. This will relieve tension on the bracket.
  4. The balance of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  6. Reverse remaining removal procedure.
  7. Start engine and check for oil leaks.

S14 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the oil pan to expose the oil pump.
  3. Remove the sprocket mounting nut by turning it clockwise and pull the sprocket from the shaft.

NOTE
The sprocket nut is a left hand thread.

  1. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and the oil pump support mounting bolts.
  2. Lower the oil pump.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump on the engine and tighten the pump-to-block bolts, then the support bolts to 15-17 ft. lbs. (20-24 Nm).
  2. Place the pump drive chain around the drive sprocket and slide over the pump shaft. Tighten the nut by turning it counterclockwise to 18-21 ft. lbs. (25-29 Nm).
  3. Check the slack in the drive chain. The chain should have slight free-play when depressed on thumb pressure.
  4. If the chain is too loose, add oil pump mounting shims as necessary between the pump and engine block mounting. The shims are available at your dealer or parts supplier. Be sure to match the bore in the shim with the bore in the block.
  5. The balance of assembly is in reverse order of disassembly.
