bmwrepairs: 2005 BMW 325 Intake Manifold REMOVAL and installation?

Removal & Installation

M62 Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Fuel system pressure
Negative battery cable
Center cover from the cylinder head cover
Hose clamps on the idle speed control and the throttle valve assembly
Plug on the mass air flow sensor
Upper section of the air cleaner assembly along with the MAF sensor
Right-hand cover from the cylinder head cover
Plug for the oil level switch
Connectors for the ignition coils
Both KS, for cylinders 1 and 2 along with 3 and 4, and the pulse sensor
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, Throttle Valve (TVS) sensor and the Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve
Diagnostic connector from the mounting bracket and disconnect the engine wiring connector
Ignition coil ground wire, located near the rear engine lifting eye, then the temperature sensor (black) for the temperature gauge, and the temperature sensor (white) for the Digital Motor Electronics (DME)
4 bolts for the intake manifold cover, and remove the holder
Throttle cable
Left-hand cover from the cylinder head cover
Ignition coil electrical connectors
Both KS and the camshaft reference sender
Coolant expansion tank plug and overflow hose, then remove the 2 mounting bolts, and move the tank aside
Oil pressure switch electrical connector and remove the wiring
Fasteners for the wiring ducts on the cylinder heads
Vacuum hoses on the radiator, and loosen the hose clamp. Pull the vacuum hose off of the brake booster.
Tank vapor venting hose from the throttle valve assembly
Fuel feed and return lines
Hose off of the end cover on the back of the manifold
Mounting bolts, and remove the end cover together with the pressure regulating valve straight back to prevent damaging the vent pipe
Intake manifold

To install:

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

6mm fasteners: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
7mm fasteners: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
8mm fasteners: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

M73 5.4L Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Fuel system pressure
Negative battery cable
Vacuum hoses for the pressure regulators. Lift out the injection pipes with the injectors attached.
Distributor caps and the throttle valve necks on the manifolds
Spark plug wires and the ignition lead pipes
Crankcase breather hose and loosen the manifold support nuts
Nose guard
Intake manifold

To install:

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

6mm fasteners: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
7mm fasteners: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
8mm fasteners: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

N52 Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Remove or disconnect the following:
NOTE
Do not detach fuel line.

Negative battery cable
Tension strut
Intake filter housing and mass air flow sensor
Engine covers
Vent hose and cable holder
Electrical connectors and engine wiring harness, set aside and secure.
Oil pressure switch plug connector

Fuel rail, set aside and secure

To install:

Replace all seals and gaskets.

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

7mm fasteners: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)

N62 Engines

Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable
Engine covers
Intake hose
Injection pipe
Differential pressure sensor and servomotor connectors
Vent hose and cable holder
Intake manifold fasteners and the intake manifold

To install:

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

6mm fasteners: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
7mm fasteners: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
8mm fasteners: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

S54 Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable
On SMG transmissions, unplug the hydraulic pump relay from the electronics box. Disconnect the line between the expansion tank and hydraulic unit
Microfilter assembly
Hoses and positive cable lead from the intake manifold
Oil dipstick guide tube from the manifold
Manifold support fasteners
Clamps from the throttle assemblies
Intake manifold

To install:

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

S62 Engines

Remove or disconnect the following:
NOTE
Note that the funnels for cylinders 1 and 5 are different from the others; mark them and set aside.

Negative battery cable
Intake filter housing and mass air flow sensor
Left and right air ducts
Engine cover
Intake funnels

Slacken the bolts one turn starting from the outside and work towards the center. Start with the outer two rows, then do the inner rows near the center of the manifold. Once all are loosened one turn, remove all bolts following the same sequence. Disconnect any hoses and remove the manifold.

To install:

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten all manifold fasteners in the reverse procedure of removal, first to (5 Nm) then to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
